Frosthaven kicks off record-breaking launch

Frosthaven, the much-anticipated sequel to Gloomhaven, launched this week to an incredible $5 million in less than 24 hours. It’s since added another $1.2 million in its second day, and is showing no signs of stopping.

Creator Isaac Childres seemed as surprised as anyone, commenting that he had hoped to possibly reach the $5 million mark by the end of the campaign, but never expecting such a huge reception right out of the gate.

For an extremely complex, niche game like this to perform so well is a testament to the dedication and quality Childres put into Gloomhaven. As someone who owns and loves the first one, but is nowhere near finishing all the content in the game, I’m still backing Frosthaven even though I’ll likely never finish both games in this lifetime.

So what’s different this time around to make it worth backing if you already have Gloomhaven?

Besides new characters, scenarios, and maps, of course, the main changes revolve around the unique aspects of Frosthaven’s location.

In Gloomhaven, gold was the main type of loot you could collect on missions, with the occasional treasure chest. In Frosthaven, there are less opportunities to spend gold, but you can collect raw resources to craft into potions, improve buildings in the settlement, and more.

Speaking of buildings, they’re another new addition. These sound really exciting, as constructing or upgrading buildings allows you to gain bonuses, attract new character classes to town, and more.

Finally, there will be summer and winter seasons, which affect enemies, which buildings are available, road and city events, and more. It’ll be interesting to see how these are incorporated into the game, but the variety could add a nice challenge.

If you haven’t played Gloomhaven yet and are looking for an amazing game that can pretty become a part-time job, I’d highly recommend backing Frosthaven while you can get it at launch pricing. If you’re like me and still have a lot of Gloomhaven left to finish, it’s a tougher decision… but let’s be honest, you still want it, don’t you? 😉
